Visiting the East Side of Glacier National Park in June

June in Glacier National Park provides a singular window where summer’s precipice juxtaposes winter’s end. Burgeoning wildflowers and newly green aspen contrast mountains still capped in winter’s snow. Our east side communities begin their summer swell of visitors at an easy pace, allowing for crowd-free enjoyment of the park and surrounding destinations.

This year, June is setting up to be a particularly advantageous month to visit the east side as it will be the only month until autumn that personal vehicles will be allowed to access Many Glacier without a lodging or service reservation. All other east side entrances will be reservation-free for summer’s entirety. Read more about the planned construction projects in Many Glacier.

Hiking:

June is the best month to experience the full force of the spring thaw at one of Glacier’s voluminous waterfalls. Destinations abound on the east side with Apikuni Falls, Red Rock Falls, Virginia Falls and Running Eagle Falls to name a few. Remember to pack rain gear!

Biking:

Locals know that June is the ideal time to explore Glacier by bicycle. Plow crews are typically still chipping away at high elevation snow on the Sun Road, allowing for hiker/biker access only on portions of the road. Two Medicine is another popular biking destination though vehicle traffic will also be permitted. For east side bike rentals, visit Rising Wolf Outfitters.

Dining:

Most seasonal establishments reopen by mid-June and are excited to welcome back hungry hikers. It’s the perfect time to enjoy our east side eateries without contending with the wait times and crowds of peak season. For more information, head to our blog on St. Mary & Babb dining options.

Lodging:

We’re offering discounted rates from June 16th - June 22nd in hope that our local and regional friends get an opportunity to experience Glacier at a pace and price that harkens back to visits of years past. Find our availability on our booking page. June is also a great time to score campsites or lodging within the park!
